Key West, Florida

From The SeaPlane over Key West
As most of you know, I'm
single, so when I vacation (which isn't often considering our busy seasons
in Seattle) I try to hook up with friends or family around the country
I haven't seen in awhile.
Fourth of July Celebration - Destination;
Key West, Florida. The furthest point south of Seattle in the United
States!
Please keep in mind that for
some reason, this year was a strange year for weather in Key West.
Last year it was sunny and humid the whole time. This year it was warm
enough to wear shorts and swimwear but there were as many clouds as we see
in Seattle! It was still balmy, breezy and
tropical! Not too humid but I got burned after two hours in the sun.
The first stop you should make in Key West is to
your local "scooter rental" place. (There's not much parking and you
get around easier). What you see here is a glorified
golf cart that resembles an "eggshell". They are a blast!
Everywhere we went people "rubber-necked" to see this cool vehicle cruising
Key West. A group of us met down there for vacation so it was more
practical than scooters. (considering we needed a designated driver!)
NEXT STOP:
DRY TORTUGAS
Take a seaplane to the Dry Tortugas
National Park. It's a blast! They show you shipwrecks on the
way. If you prefer a slower mode, take a catamaran or other boat!
Once you arrive you can have a picnic, take a
walk through the "million-brick" fort, lay out on the beaches or go
snorkeling. (we did all of the aforementioned, but while snorkeling we
met some reef sharks up close. Needless to say, I'm shopping for a new
water activity!)
LOTS TO DO!
You can go shopping at Mallory Square,
an outdoor marketplace on the boardwalk where there is also a sunset
festival every evening.
You can see street performers while you stroll,
shop the artisan booths and then enjoy outdoor dining with your sweetheart
at the Cuban restaurant for an authentic meal sipping pina coladas, while
the sounds of Cuban Salsa play throughout the romantic sunset!
Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville is close by as well as Kelly McGillis'
place, Mangoes, Hooters, Planet Hollywood
and so much shopping, you can walk for days! Wyland has
two galleries in town! Ernest Hemingway's house is a museum
to tour.
The nightlife is spectacular! If you like to
dance you have many choices. From live bands to high energy club
beats, karaoke bars and folk singers. There's something for everyone
in Key West.
If you like to fish, you can go on a charter, rent a boat, or go 45
minutes into Marathon and fish from the pier at Bahia Honda Park
into beautiful blue-green ocean! (we didn't quite catch any fish that
day!)
If you fly directly into Key West you will miss
other great Keys; Hawks Cay, Key Largo, Islamorada, if you don't have a car.
If you're planning to go "south" for your honeymoon, Florida is a
great choice. You can go to Ft. Lauderdale or Miami and take a day
cruise or take a quick trip to the carribbean! The weather is warmer
than Seattle and there's a lot to do. Great place for adventures!
